Developed in the 1920’s by Joseph H. Pilates, Pilates is a system of exercise designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. Pilates exercises are performed either on the floor or on specialized equipment. Through the systematic practice of specific exercises and focused breathing patterns, Pilates is the ideal complement to cardiovascular training, rehab, or elite sport training. It is a perfect exercise regimen for life.

However, Pilates is not only exercise, it is a mind-body technique that uses slow and controlled movements that are exacted with precision. Practiced faithfully, Pilates yields numerous benefits: Increased lung capacity and circulation through the deep, healthy breathing. Strength and flexibility, particularly of the abdomen and back muscles, coordination-both muscular and mental, are key components in an effective Pilates program. Posture, balance, and core strength are all greatly increased. Bone density and joint health improve, and many experience positive body awareness for the first time. Pilates teaches balance and control of the body, and that capacity spills over into other areas of one's life. At Zazen we are holistic in our approach - to life and to exercise. Beyond the physical realm, Pilates offers a powerful key to unlock the body and mind from old patterns and habits and move the practitioner into a more energetic life with strength and grace.

Almost anyone can benefit greatly from Pilates:

Elite athletes and those interested in improving their sports performance (i.e. hockey, martial arts, running, golf, tennis)
Elderly population
Rehab conditions from accident or injury, muscle imbalance, posture reeducation
Rehab conditions such as osteoporosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, acute/chronic lower back or neck pain, post-surgery
Those wishing to increase their flexibility
Anyone who wishes to develop their coordination, balance and a sleek, functional body
Those who desire a better quality of life

Pilates is not ideal for those who are obese, athletes wanting to “bulk up”, or individuals seeking to increase their cardiovascular endurance.
